Repetitive Strain Injuries

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) or Work Related Upper Limb Disorder (WRULD) is the name given to a group of injuries affecting the tendons and nerves primarily of the neck and upper limbs.

RSI/WRULD is a progressive condition and the symptoms include aches, pain, swelling, numbness, tingling, and weakness, loss of grip and restricted movement of limbs.

Work related factors which can affect the aggravation of RSI/WRULD include pulling, pushing and lifting, poor posture, highly repetitive movements, prolonged periods of work without adequate breaks, twisting, gripping, and direct pressure.

The following conditions are often grouped under the RSI/WRULD umbrella: -

  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • cervical spondylosis
  • De Quervain’s Syndrome
  • epicondylitis (tennis or golfers elbow)
  • tendonitis
  • tenosynovitis
  • trigger finger
  • bursitis
