Noise Induced Hearing Loss & Tinnitus

Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is damage to hearing as a result of exposure to noise.

Generally damage to hearing as a result of noise can be Gradual deterioration in hearing as a result of lengthy exposure to noise or Immediate damage as a result of exposure to a sudden and exceptionally loud noise.

Employees at special risk of noise induced hearing loss are usually those in heavy manufacturing industries where there are noisy machinery and plant on the premises.

Quite often employees fail to notice any damage to their hearing as hearing loss is generally not painful.

However some symptoms, which may indicate a noise induced hearing loss include

  • Speech that appears to be muffled or far away
  • Difficulty hearing a conversation against a noisy background
  • Consonants seem to be lost

Tinnitus is the ringing/buzzing/hissing in one or both ears and maybe associated with hearing loss and can be caused as a result of exposure to excessive noise.
